How to make custom skins - The Complete Guide

    ***31st March 2016 edit***

Im not so sure how relevant this guide is now, with the coming of the new editor and such. But if you have stumbled upon this looking for photoshop, feel free to add me and i can help you with obtaining it. (my steam profile link is at the bottom of this post)

    ***--------------------------****

Hello everyone, if you have struggled as much as i have to make your dino skin ideas come to life and look good, then look no further. ive complied everything here for you. This works for windows 7

Ok first of all. Download this folder from my dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/s/mf2xlcqyk2...odels.rar?dl=0

this folder contains all the models and textures of most dinos.

You need to download XNALara xps Here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/9kdoa66ca5...a_XPS.rar?dl=0 which is a small, easy to use program which allows you to view .mesh and .xps model files. These files come from the very complicated way of extracting models from the Unreal engine.

    Windows 7: do this:

    Download this: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl....aspx?id=22588
    and this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=40773

These are required to run the program. Just double click the .exe file and youre good to go.

Windows 8: Read the read me! in the xalara folder and follow the instructions.

Once you have got XNALara xps, put all of the folders from in the "data" folder i gave you in the dino models rar, put them into the data folder inside XNALara. I have included all of the dino class models and textures (apart from tupa) which are ready to view in the program. you simply click File>add model.

If you want to view the model with your custom texture, firstly you need to make one. you can find all of the texture files in the corresponding folders. They are targa files (.tga) which is the standard for game textures. These files can be opened and made easily with photoshop. also in the obj folders, there are all the texture files as .png's so that you can view them quickly. (a bonus tip - .png format preserves transparrency, .jpeg does not.)

So you open the .tga file in photoshop and re-colour it how you want. Photoshop may take a little practice but theres many tutorials out there on youtube. once youve made your masterpiece, save it as a .tga. create a new folder and name it whatever you call this new skin, e.g White Wolf Raptor. copy all of the texture files and .mesh (or.xps) file from the original dinosaur folder you worked from, so in this case i would cope all the novaraptor files and paste them into my white wolf folder. you need to delete the original texture that you worked from, and then rename your custom texture file to that name. so in this case the original raptor texture file is called D_Raptor.tga so i will rename my white wolf.tga to D_Raptor.tga. now copy the white wolf folder and paste it in XNALara_XPS>data you will see all the other dino folders here too. now just run the program and view your new texture

If you want to show it off in the forums, simply go here: http://imgur.com/ and upload it all free, no accounts needed. then copy the direct URL. when you post in the forum click the insert picture button and paste the link.

like i said all the .obj's are there so you can even remodel stuff if you wish, but you would probably have to completely texture it and UV map it from scratch if you wanted it textured. if that sentence is over your head, then don't bother trying to do it.

As a final note, I can help you get photoshop. just add me on steam. i heard a lot of you saying you dont have good software.

    Enjoy people!

If you're talking about opening XNALara, check your XNALara folder and see if there's a file called "XNA.cfg". I have to delete that file every time I open the program, otherwise it won't work.

Put the folder for each model into the data folder in XNALara, then they will show up on the Add Models option.

Thank you for this I look forward to trying this out. I do have a question, though. Would you be willing to make a video tutorial of this? If not, that's ok, I just know I'm a better visual learner than a written-instruction learner. I'm sure I can figure it out, just an idea.

I've been planning to make a video tutorial for this stuff, so as long as Aze doesn't mind my thread hijack of some sort, I can share :P
